Located in the European country of Turkey is a lovely resort city that was once known as Alaiye. Nowadays Alaiye is known as Alanya. This city is located around 75 miles away from the Turkish city of Antalya and has close to 400,000 people living in it. Alanya is found on a small peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea near the Taurus Mountains. People who visit this city will be interested in known that the following empires have used it as a stronghold; Seleucid, Ptolemaic, Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine. The name of the city comes from Alaeddin Keykubad I. 

The climate of Alanya is a moderate Mediterranean climate that includes a great deal of rain in the winter season. The summers are dry, hot, and great for any sports or trips involving water and warmth. The tourist part of Alanya likes to key the term ‘where the sun smiles’ to describe the lovely climate of this resort city. A great wonder to see while in Alanya would be the waterspouts that are frequent near the shores due to the storm cells of fair weather the city has. Beautiful rainbows can be seen toward the Taurus Mountains due to the sea fog in the mornings, making it a lovely spot for sightseeing. 

There are very high mountains near the city that enable tourists to almost constantly see snow on their tops, giving the country a worldly feel because multiple environments are seen in one spot. The average temperature of the sea surrounding the city is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average temperature in the fall is around 82 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it an ideal spot for any adventures or holidays. 

Alanya Castle is a wonderful place to see while in this city. This building was supposedly built in 1226 and includes many major landmarks. These can be seen within and outside of the castle. Recently in 2007, the government began the renovation of this castle and now uses the ancient Byzantine Church within the castle for a Christian community centre. 

The Red Tower called Kizil Kule is a 33 meter tall brick building that can be found at the harbour or Alanya Castle. Although this is the last of the marvellous towers, the architecture of this ancient city can clearly be seen in the fact that it still stands. An ethnographic museum can be found within the tower, giving a wonderful view of its history.

Another great sight to see while in Alanya is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sights known as Tersane. Be sure to make a trip to Ataturk’s House and Museum for a taste of the local culture and bring home some souvenirs to show others from your holiday!
