The Wonders of Side
Located in Turkey is a lovely city by the name of Side
that has huge historical value to the country, as well
as being a hot tourist resort. Located in the Antalya
province Side is found on the southern coast of the
Mediterranean Sea. It can be found near Selimiye and
Manavgat, nearly 75 miles from the city of Antalya.
Because it is located on the east Pamphylian coast, it
was the target for many raiders in the past such as Arab
fleets and Christian zealots, as well as many
earthquakes. This caused it to fall into antiquity years
ago.
The temperatures of Side are the same as the cities nearby. In the summertime the temperate can range as high as 103 degree Fahrenheit. The wintertime is a bit cooler with temperatures going from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool ocean breezes which constantly flow from the sea keep the area from overheating, providing an excellent tourist destination for many people. Due to the low humidity, the area is great for people who suffer from breathing and bone problems such as asthma and arthritis. The majority of the year the sun is out every day, making it a beautiful and comfortable place for people who wish to take part in swimming, exploring, and tanning. One of the most notable things to check out while in Side is the massively extensive ruins of Pamphylia. These ruins used to be a great theatre that attracted visitors from all over the region. The theatre and surrounding area are actually composed of both Greek and Roman architecture, giving it a wonderful blend of two cultures. The gates to the city have been well preserved over the years and reconstructed to almost resemble what they looked like centuries ago. There is a museum within the ruins of the city that allows visitors to have a glimpse of ancient statues and sarcophagi from the period of the Romans. The square next to the museum contains the remnants of the Fortuna and Tyche temples. One of the great public baths of side has been recently restored, giving an even deeper glimpse into the paradise that used to be this city. Another great area of interest in Side is the nymphaneum. The grotto within this beautiful structure contained a natural water sources and was dedicated to the mythical nymphs. This city has been excavated by archaeologists from Turkey and all over the world since 1947.
